Campus and Community
The
Urbana-Champaign campus of the University
of Illinois is, as its name suggests, nested
where the two cities meet. You get both the established
residential atmosphere of Urbana as well as the
more modern, dynamic Champaign. Among the campus
town attractions (besides the library, which is
one of the largest university libraries in the US)
is the University’s Krannert
Center for the Performing Arts which is an excellent
venue for those interested in music of all genres,
theatre, and dance. The
Spurlock Museum and the Krannert
Art Museum, as well as the private galleries
in town, enhance the arts scene around the university.
The different venues and restaurants around campustown
are a good place for dining and entertainment. The
city is surrounded by several parks and natural
reservations, among which the university owned Allerton
Park.
For those interested in sports, the university’s
campus recreation and sports center offers the possibility
to practice a number of sports in the indoor and
outdoor swimming pools, strength training facilities,
the soccer, baseball and football fields, in the
ice arena and on the basketball courts. You can
also follow the University’s teams competing
in different Big Ten events. Moreover, the sports
center is now undergoing major modernization which
will dramatically increase its size and the quality
of its services.
